| Customer Reviews: Just Good NOT GREAT August 29, 2010 John D. Burkhart (WEST VIRGINIA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this to replace a Yamaha I sold because I wanted something different. This had great reviews, but the reviews must be from people who really do not know what good sound is. My Yamaha blew this away and sounded so much nicer. I also have a older Onkyo from 1992 that will just blow it away. I have a set of Klipsch KLF-10s which is a great speaker at 98DB. I also think it should have some optical ports for hooking up your CD player ETC. I am not saying its bad, but not as good as others and not as good as the reviews people have left. I just boxed it up and I am sending it back to Amazon for a refund.
Deep clear stereo sound July 12, 2010 steve Very pleased with the stereo sound of this unit.
Deep, clear tones.
AM reception exceptionally weak. Had to buy an AM amplifier.
FM OK.
Stereeo Reciever June 28, 2010 Von Stofer (South Riding, VA United States) This Onkyo reciever is the best value for the money. I chose it because it has phono inputs that allow me to record viyl on to CD and preserve the music.
Very nice stereo receiver June 21, 2010 D. Wilborn (Republic of Texas) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've had this receiver for about a month now and I'm totally happy with it. It's set up with an old Pioneer 25 disc CD changer, a pair of Polk Monitor 30's and an old-ish Aiwa subwoofer. None of this is high-end, audiophile stuff. If that's what you're looking for then don't try the Onkyo TX-8555 or anything in it's price range. Like another reviewer said, "You get what you pay for."
On the other hand, I ain't no audiophile. I don't have the money. :)
I love my new receiver. I listen to mainly electronic or "techno" types of music, also live worship and alt rock. The receiver definitely pumps out A LOT of bass. The sub is really just to round out the sound not to blow holes in the wall. It works very well for thumping trance with plenty of low-end detail. I hate booty bass hip-hop. Give me clear, clean, melodic bass. TX-8555 FTW!!!
The speakers you connect any receiver to will make all the difference. I got my Polks used for really cheap. They sound better than anything I could find new within my budget. And they sound infinitely better than the mini-system I had before. Later I will experiment with speaker positioning to get a bit more clarity in the low-mid range. Right now I'm really happy with the whole thing.
There is room for expansion on the Onkyo, too. I will connect the audio from my DVD player and probably a computer to it soon. I'm looking at getting an Onkyo iPod dock for the receiver. Yeah, I'm pretty much hooked on this.
Great product June 18, 2010 Betsy L. Howard (Kirkwood, MO United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was a relpacement receiver and what a choice we made. The sound is fantastic and it is great to have one that is so easy to use. I would highly reccommend this receiver to anyone interested in either replacing or purchasing one for the first time.
